The amazing Earth Day sale might’ve enabled me in a big, bad way (thank goodness my husband is on board with my fluff obsession). BUT we’re able to review some more cloth diapers because of it! While browsing some of the sales on Kelly’s Closet, I came across the Funky Fluff Lux diaper system and thought I’d give it a try. It’s available in stay dry, athletic wicking jersey, and bamboo. We opted for the bamboo (reviewed below).
What is it?
The Funky Fluff Bamboo system is a “one-size diaper that fits from 7-35+lbs. [It] comes with the redesigned bamboo terry soakers. This diaper can be used as a pocket all-in-one (AIO) or all-in-two depending on how you use the inserts,” (source: Kelly’s Closet description).
This is the Katniss Arrow print. Upon first inspection, the build quality is stellar and well-designed. Funky Fluff is a Canadian company founded by two mothers. Their diapers are fairly and conscientiously made in China.
Note the 3-snap fastener design. The inner snap and stretchy elastic ensures a good seal around the thighs regardless of size.
It comes with two bamboo terry soakers (80% bamboo viscose/20% polyester)–one small, one large (both pictured)–and are very soft and absorbent.
This diaper system is very customizable: you can snap both soakers together, use them individually, or even use your own soaker pads/prefolds!
Here’s the system complete opened. As you can see, you can choose to use this as a pocket diaper, AIO, or AI2. The cool thing is that there are snaps on both the front and back, so you can adapt the diaper for both front and back wetters!
When you snap both ends, it becomes a convenient AIO: the soaker is snapped and tucked under the flap (see above) and on the other end.
We chose to use this as an AIO on the medium rise setting among the four snap options: Newborn, Small, Medium, Large. We had zero problems with leakage and wing droop for our 11-week newborn. However, it added a considerable amount of bulk when using both soakers; it’s the bulkiest system we’ve tried yet!
+ Very versatile/adaptable: can be used an AIO, pocket, hybrid, or as a cover for prefolds
+ Available in lots cute prints and colors (we have the beautiful Katniss Arrow print)
+ LOTS of rise settings
+ Wing droop will not be a problem
+ Will work for even small newborns thanks to the cross over snaps
+ Great bang-for-your-buck: comes with 2 bamboo soaker pads you can use to add absorbency with other diapers in your stash
+ The bamboo soakers are very absorbent so this can work for the heaviest wetters and as an overnight solution if bolstered by a prefold in the pocket
– Very bulky: makes our Little Dimples have the fluffiest bum (we personally love a fluffy bum, but the bulk prevented her from fitting into outfits she normally could wear)
– Not available in hook & loop if that’s your preference
As a 3-in-1 system (retails for $24.45 at Kelly’s Closet), this diaper has proven to be great option for our EBF newborn. It can easily contain EBF poo and pee with the great absorbency of the bamboo soaker pads. We can see this being the perfect diaper for parents who love to have a versatile diaper and to have fun with different systems. The customizable rise settings and the nice stretch around the thighs allow for a perfect fit every time. It works for even our skinny but tall Little Dimples (she’s 11 weeks old and already close to outgrowing 6 mo PJs!).
I wouldn’t recommend this to parents who love trim diapers. For more trim AIOs, we recommend GroVia, Smart Bottoms, Bambino Mio, or Sweet Pea (reviews to come!). Also note that this isn’t an organic, natural fiber option; it’s 80% bamboo terry and 20% polyester. If your baby is sensitive to wetness, the stay dry system might be the better option.
Next time, we might grab the stay dry system as well to see how that compares to this bamboo system! We’re really pleased with this new diaper find. Happy to report that Funky Fluff bamboo system is mommy, daddy + baby approved.
